Car hire at Malaga airport: what to sort out before you fly

Documents you need at pick-up

You need three things to collect your rental car at Malaga airport. A valid driving licence, an ID document (passport or national ID card) and your booking confirmation. A licence issued in an EU country is accepted as it is, with no International Driving Permit (IDP). UK photocard licence holders do not need an IDP to drive in Spain as visitors either. If your licence is not written in the Latin alphabet, bring an IDP with it.

Tip: photograph all your documents on your phone before you leave. If you lose the originals on the trip, digital copies make life easier with your embassy or the rental company.

Flight number and contact details

Give your flight number when you book. It lets the rental company track your flight in real time. If the plane is late, the team moves the handover time to match, automatically. Save the company's phone and WhatsApp number too, so you can get in touch the minute you land.

Download an offline map

Before you board, download an offline map of the Malaga and Costa del Sol area in Google Maps or Maps.me. You will not depend on mobile signal from your first minute behind the wheel. Cover the area from Malaga to Marbella and Ronda. Those are the most common destinations.

How does car pick-up at Malaga airport work?

  1. Online booking: you choose the dates and the car class, and give your flight number.
  2. Booking confirmation: it arrives by email.
  3. You land in Malaga: we track your flight and contact you by phone or WhatsApp (service in English or Polish).
  4. Meeting at the terminal: about 10 to 15 minutes after that contact.
  5. Paperwork: we check your documents, sign the agreement and you pay (no deposit).
  6. Car check: we fill in the handover report together and you are free to go.

From first contact after landing to driving away, the whole process takes about 20 minutes.

Step 1 at the airport: landing and leaving the terminal

Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (IATA code: AGP) handles around 26 million passengers a year. It is the fourth busiest airport in Spain and the third on the mainland. International flights arrive at Terminal 3, a modern building opened in 2010.

After passport control and baggage reclaim, follow the signs out of the terminal on the arrivals level. Do not look for a rental desk inside the building. Most independent companies, Car4Rent Malaga included, bring the car straight to the terminal or to a car park nearby. That beats queuing at a big chain's desk.

The difference: the big chains (Hertz, Europcar, Avis) have desks in the terminal. They also ask for a credit card and a deposit of €500 to €1,500. Local companies like Car4Rent work without a deposit and bring the car to the terminal.

Step 2 at the airport: meeting the Car4Rent Malaga team

Once you have landed, send a WhatsApp message or call the number in your booking confirmation. The Car4Rent Malaga team speaks English and Polish, so nothing gets lost in translation. You agree on an exact spot by the terminal, usually the kiss and fly zone or the short-stay car park.

The wait is usually 10 to 15 minutes from the moment you get in touch. Flight delayed? Don't worry. Thanks to flight tracking, the team knows about the delay and shifts the handover time. The service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, bank holidays included.

No signal? Malaga airport has free Wi-Fi (the network is called “Airport Free Wifi Aena”). Connect and message us on WhatsApp. Handy if your UK network charges for roaming in the EU.

Step 3: paperwork and signing the agreement

The meeting itself takes a few minutes. The representative checks your driving licence and ID, talks you through the rental terms and explains the insurance options. Car4Rent Malaga has three levels of cover. They run from basic third-party liability (included in the price) to the Full package with no excess.

Good to know: you do not need a credit card. Car4Rent takes debit cards, cash in euros and Revolut. Nothing is blocked on your card. You pay for the rental and that is it.

Insurance options: a quick overview

  • Basic cover: third-party liability, included in the rental price.

  • Plus package: a lower excess for damage or theft.

  • Full package (Full Cover): zero excess for damage or theft, and one less thing to worry about.

Step 4: checking the car before you drive

Before you set off, spend 5 minutes looking the car over. Together with the representative you fill in the handover report, which records any existing scratches and dents. It is standard procedure and it protects both sides.

What to look at:

  • Bodywork damage: scratches, dents, chips in the windscreen. Photograph them.

  • Fuel level: check the gauge on the dashboard and compare it with the report.

  • Air conditioning: switch it on straight away. At 35°C in Malaga it is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

  • Lights and indicators: a quick test before you leave.

  • Spare wheel or repair kit: check it is in the boot.

Pro tip: walk round the car and film it on your phone. A 30-second video is the best proof of the car's condition at pick-up.

Normally drive in the UK or Ireland? The car is left-hand drive. Take a moment to set the mirrors and find the gear lever with your right hand.

Step 5: you hit the road

Keys in hand, agreement signed, car checked. Time to go. Getting out of Malaga airport is simple: follow the signs for the motorway. The main directions are:

  • Towards Malaga city centre: the MA-21 heading north (about 8 km, 15 minutes).

  • Towards Marbella and Estepona (west): the A-7 or the AP-7 toll motorway.

  • Towards Nerja and Motril (east): the A-7 heading east.

  • Towards Ronda (inland): the A-7 ring road, then the A-357 via Cártama.

Before you move, set your sat nav (online or offline) and make sure you know which way you are heading. The first roundabout after the airport exit can be confusing. Keep to the right-hand lane if you are heading for Malaga. Used to driving on the left? Spanish roundabouts run anticlockwise, so look left before you join.

Frequently asked questions about car hire pick-up at Malaga airport

Can I pick up the car outside office hours?

Yes. Car4Rent Malaga operates 24/7, including nights and weekends. Even if your flight lands at 2:00 am, the team will be waiting for you.

What if my flight is badly delayed (more than 3 hours)?

Nothing changes for you, as long as you gave your flight number when booking. We track the flight automatically and move the handover time. There is no extra charge for a flight delay.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Malaga?

No, not if your licence was issued in an EU country. UK photocard licence holders do not need an IDP to drive in Spain as visitors either. You do need one if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet.

How long does the whole pick-up take?

About 15 to 20 minutes from your call or message after landing to driving away. That is much quicker than queuing at a big chain's desk.

Does no deposit mean worse insurance?

No. Every Car4Rent car comes with compulsory third-party liability insurance, however you choose to pay. On top of that you can add the Plus package or the Full package, which gives the highest level of protection.

What happens if I damage the car?

The standard insurance procedure applies. What you pay depends on the cover you chose:

  • €0 excess with the Full package,
  • a reduced excess with the Plus package,
  • the repair cost on basic cover.

Can I pay in pounds?

No. Car4Rent takes payment by card or in cash in euros (EUR). If you pay by card, the amount is charged in euros.
